Deep fakes are getting more common every day. So, what is a deep fake? Deep fakes are taking the likeness of one person in an existing image or video and replace them with someone else’s likeness using artificial neural networks. It is often used interchangeably with AI generated media. May involve audio, image, video and speech synthesis.

Synthetic media is an umbrella term that refers to any media that is manipulated by software and cheap fakes and deep fakes are all forms of this media. Cheap fakes can be created with apps and are easy to spot.

Deep fakes are harder to spot and the technology is not the problem instead their use is. Memes fall into this category but their use is to entertain. Deep fakes are starting to be used in advertising and politics and can be use in positive ways however the usage of this technology is predominately negative.

Deep Nude is a program for windows and Linux that takes pictures of women and in 30 seconds could create an image of an unclothed women based on a clothed picture.

Deep fakes have been also used in financial fraud as voices and text people use can be replicated. Deep fakes have been used to silence critiques and it will get harder to tell what is real and what isn’t.

Mis/disinformation is more prevalent today and covers a wide range of issues and topics and deep fakes create doubt in new forms of media that were traditionally trusted including audio and video. This will make the education of media literacy more complex

Facebook will leave deep fakes up on the site as long as they do not break any other rules
